Back in 2010, I invented a solar charger to charge an iphone since there was no such thing at time. Took about a year in development, finally made a trial run and offered the first USB solar charger from my website. Sales took off! Could not keep up and needed help. I found a local small "mom and pop" company in San Jose CA to manufacture the sChargers and fulfill orders. Business was great for Suntactics. Unfortunately a few years into into it, there was a death within the mom and pop company. The mom passed from ovarian cancer. Moving forward their company struggled to keep up. I decided to take on the manufacturing myself(bring it in-house). So I leased a facility, hired some employees and business was good. But sales started decreasing because China was taking over the solar charger market. But I was determined to keep my business and manufacturing in the USA. I put funding into marketing, sales and even tradeshows. I persisted. But sales continued to slow.
Our "bread and butter" sales came mostly from Amazon. Then Amazon made changes. We relied heavily on Amazon for orders, but now they impose many restrictions for solar chargers. Amazon continued to remove our listings because they insisted our solar chargers use a battery. A "certification is required" for all solar chargers they say. Why? because your solar charger has a battery. "Our solar chargers DO NOT use batteries" I told them. Our solar chargers charge a phone directly from the sun without batteries. They would reinstate the listing only to bring it back down again after a couple months. We continued to take losses regardless.
Ultimately I lost the war as I could not compete with low cost Chinese solar chargers. Consumers want cheap! After crafting high quality solar chargers in the USA for over 10 years, I'm done. China wins.
